A Rhytidectomy, commonly called a facelift, is one of the most common facial rejuvenation procedures performed by facial plastic surgeons. The goal of this procedure is to lift the cheeks and jowls, define the jawline, and improve the contour of the chin and upper neck. There are many different types of facelift procedures. Dr. Sandel will discuss each of these with you and recommend a conservative technique that will give you natural long-lasting results.

For the most optimal results, facelifts should be performed under a mild general anesthesia. This allows our patients to be safely and comfortably asleep while minimizing the need for narcotic medications. There is minimal pain following the procedure and although pain medication may be prescribed, most patients tell us that Tylenol provides relief from any discomfort they may experience. Sutures are removed as soon as 7 days.

Dr. Sandel might recommend liposuction to remove fatty deposits from the jowls, neck or cheeks. He’ll explain to you that liposuction is more than just “sucking out the fat.”

Specific surgical techniques

To tighten the cheeks and neck, Dr. Sandel makes his incisions in the folds behind your ears to keep them virtually invisible. He raises the skin and tightens the connective tissue just beneath it with subcutaneous sutures. The result is a more natural appearance and less tension on the skin incisions. Then liposuction is used to remove the excess fat. If tightening the muscles or removing skin from the front of the neck is required, Dr. Sandel might make an incision under the chin. The incisions are closed with fine sutures to minimize scarring.

After the surgery

Dr. Sandel will discuss with you the regimen you should follow after the surgery. He will also discuss the possibility of other facial cosmetic procedures such a forehead and brow lift to enhance your appearance.
